One of the odder moments of my career. A reporter and I were at the police station after a man had been arrested for a series of burglaries. He called out from the cellblock that he wanted to talk to us, and then told us "I want to apologize to all the people I robbed." We advised him that he really should talk to his lawyer before doing this, but he remained firm that he wanted to confess. The police chief was called in and he too gave the guy the same advise, but he still insisted on doing so. Finally, after police had him sign a release stating this was happening of his own accord and recording his request for the record, we agreed to print it along with this image. He later told the reporter and I that he knew of our work and trusted us to be fair with him. I think he just wanted to take responsibility for his actions and move on (but it was one very strange moment to be sure).
